10 Highlights From Last Weekend’s Motorsport Action

After a busy weekend of motorsport, we’re here to run you through all of the highlights, from burning Nascars to title showdowns, car porn and last corner drama!

Ryan Briscoe’s monster shunt in Fontana wasn’t the only big crash during IndyCar’s MAVTV 500. Takuma Sato and Will Power got a little too close and collided, with both being sent hard into the wall.

The IndyCar race was packed full of overtakes and drama. In fact, a new North American open-wheel record was set for the most lead changes, with 80. Graham Rahal eventually won the race that made us all react like this…

One of our favourite racing championships, the British Touring Car Championship, was in action at Croft. Andy Priaulx, Sam Tordoff and Rob Collard claimed the three race wins after some brilliant action, making it a clean sweep for BMW and WSR.

The first ever FIA Formula E season concluded in London over the weekend, with a double-header finale in Battersea Park. Sebastien Buemi won race one to close the gap to championship leader Nelson Piquet Jr to just five points and give e.dams-Renault the teams’ title.

Stephane Sarrazin won race two but was given a time penalty for hitting zero per cent energy, handing the win to Sam Bird on home soil. The final lap was frantic, as the video above shows. Buemi desperately attempted to make up ground but couldn’t move into fifth place. With Piquet Jr eighth, he was crowned champion.

Last Sunday’s 93rd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was won by an EV with an incredible time of 9:07.222. The competition (if you can call it that) was 29 seconds behind Rhys Millen’s eO PP03 EV.

Patrick Friesacher was driving a Toyota Camry Nascar at Goodwood, but got a bit too enthusiastic completing burnouts. As well as producing plenty of smoke, the car also caught fire. Apparently he was having so much fun he didn’t notice.

Here’s one of the best views of the Goodwood hillclimb – onboard with Rod Millen in his Toyota Pikes Peak as he tackled the course at speeds of up to 130mph. Wow!

The MotoGP Dutch Grand Prix at the TT Assen Circuit couldn’t have ended in more dramatic style. Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez were battling it out for the lead into the final corner, the two made contact, Rossi was forced across the gravel and took the chequered flag in first place. Phew. Almost as incredible a finish as this save in the Moto3 race.

The Nascar Sprint Cup wasn’t actually racing at an oval last weekend. Yes, you heard correct! They were turning right and left at the Sonoma race track. Kyle Busch beat his brother Kurt to victory, in what was a dramatic event, full of crashes and even a rear axle detaching.

More European Formula 3 racing, and more flips. Michele Beretta’s car was tagged at the Norisring and pitched into the air. This one wasn’t as such high speed as some of the others we have recently seen, but the way it hit the barrier was pretty scary.
