10 Memorable Moments From The British Grand Prix

After aborting his final qualifying lap and slipping to sixth on the grid for the British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton had plenty to do to make it up to his fans on home soil. However, he did just that by storming through the field to take his second F1 victory at Silverstone, helped by his team-mate and pole-sitter Nico Rosberg’s mid-race retirement.

Following his debut podium in Austria, Valtteri Bottas went one better to take second despite starting down in 14th. Daniel Ricciardo completed a popular top three, which celebrated hosting its 50th Grand Prix. Here are 10 memorable moments:

1. Flying starts

The field suffered mixed starts when the lights went out at Silverstone. Vettel and Nico Hulkenberg, starting second and fourth, dropped back. Rosberg sailed into a commanding lead, while Button and Kevin Magnussen both made up places - as did Hamilton and Bottas, the latter helped by Sergio Perez and Jean-Eric Vergne tangling.

Ouch. The Iceman found the wall hard on the first lap, after taking to the run-off area at the exit of the fifth turn. His car hit a bump as he re-joined the circuit at speed, which caused him to lose control. The impact registered at 47G but fortunately he was okay.

3. Good guy Kimi

Felipe Massa retired from the race after his collision with Raikkonen, and despite it being a relatively light impact between the Ferrari and Williams, Kimi still wanted to know if the Brazilian was okay. Nice.

The incident red flagged the race for nearly one hour as repairs were made to the barrier. It was a long pause but a necessary one, before restarting behind the safety car.

4. Some great battles

Following the restart of the race, we saw some great battles and overtakes. Bottas moved ahead of several drivers, while Alonso and Hamilton were also on charges through the field early on.

5. Maldonado vs. Gutierrez, part two

Esteban Gutierrez and Pastor Maldonado collided once again this season. Following the former’s barrel-roll in Bahrain after he was hit by the Lotus driver, the Mexican then pitched Maldonado into the air on the ninth lap after a collision entering Club corner. The Sauber driver soon retired, while his rival was - surprisingly - able to continue. Gutierrez was handed a three-place grid penalty for the next race.

6. Rosberg hits trouble

The race took a dramatic turn on lap 29 after Rosberg - who was the race leader at the time - slowed with a gearbox issue. He desperately tried to continue but was forced to park his W05 and hand the lead to Hamilton, costing us a potentially fantastic scrap for the top spot.

7. Battle of the world champions

One of the highlights of the race was the battle for fifth place between Vettel and Alonso. The pair switched places several times and banged wheels on a couple of occasions too. The fight lasted several laps, with the former eventually winning and claiming the final spot in the top five.

8. Second home win

After claiming the lead of the race, Hamilton was unstoppable and dominated the closing stages, eventually taking the chequered flag 30 seconds clear of Bottas. It was an emotional second victory at Silverstone for the Brit, in front of a hugely enthusiastic and passionate home crowd. It was great for the 50th GP at the track to have a British winner.

9. A popular podium

It was a very popular podium, with Hamilton in first and Bottas in second. The Finn scored his best ever result in F1, two weeks after he secured his maiden top three result in Austria. Ricciardo - the man with the biggest smile in sport - completed the top three after a great drive.

10. Button just misses out

Button probably needed one more lap to score his maiden British Grand Prix podium (despite 14 previous attempts), but he ended up missing out by just 0.9 seconds after closing in on Ricciardo in the closing stages. It was an emotional weekend for the Brit, as it was the first home race since his late father John’s death at the start of the year. Thousands of fans wore specially-designed pink T-Shirts as a tribute.
