The 10 Most Stupid Motorsport Moments From 2016

With the winners, champions and exciting action comes the silly and bizarre motorsport moments. That was no exception in 2016. As the racing season comes to a close, we thought we’d take a look back at the stupidest moments from this year’s motorsport

We’re not sure who’s to blame for this one, really. The FIA for restarting the Singapore GP while there was a marshal on track, or the marshal himself. Nevertheless, it was a bonkers moment from this year’s F1 and – as you’d expect – it sparked a whole host of memes.

This Nascar Truck race finished in weird style when the leaders crashed across the line at the chequered flag, before then brawling rather hilariously afterwards. Stupid doesn’t even cover this one…

Things can’t get more hilarious that a hillclimb racer crashing off before they get to the first corner. Especially if the single-seater then slams through a gate and into a parked car. It wasn’t this guy’s day…

This racing driver was competing in the Trans Am First Energy 100 at Mid-Ohio when he had brain fade while returning to the track. It ended in a big crash and only one of them was at fault. We’ll leave you to guess which one…

The contact between the two Mercedes F1 drivers on the opening lap of the Spanish Grand Prix was undoubtedly the most dramatic moment of the season. Both were to blame for this, Lewis Hamilton was going for a gap that was decreasing and Nico Rosberg was aggressive with his change in direction.

It was going to happen at some point, but it’s not something we’ll see repeated in 2017, with Rosberg announcing his retirement from F1 this week.

6. Keeping elimination qualifying

The 10 Most Stupid Motorsport Moments From 2016

No one really liked the new elimination-style F1 qualifying format. We liked the old one. So keeping it for a second race after it bombed so hard in Australia was ridiculous. Thankfully it was dropped after Bahrain.

Sure, the conditions for the Brazilian GP race start were atrocious and it was difficult to keep control of the cars even on the slow down lap. But crashing on your way to the grid is pretty hilarious and awkward, whatever the situation.

The one thing every team doesn’t want to happen is their two drivers colliding. That’s exactly what happened on the last lap of the MotoGP race in Argentina between Ducati team-mates Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso. Peak facepalm.

Two errors from this Trident pit crew member caused this very scary situation in Abu Dhabi and things could’ve been a lot worse. Not only did a mistake cause the tyre to roll into the fast lane, but he then went to get it without checking if anything was coming!

Hitting the same F1 driver not once but twice on the first lap of a race has to be one of the most bizarre things we saw this year. Daniil Kvyat had a very bad time in Russia, but Sebastian Vettel’s day was even worse…

I feel for the guy in the NASCAR Truck video. He had it but more than a little contact took ot from him in the last moments of the race. Maniacs…

Vanthoor’s Macau GP win despite him crashing and flipping and Bambers’ earlier contact with Engel on the same race giving him a penalty that cost him the win

How about btcc at Snetterton. There was a crash at the start of a race where one car used another as a ramp to jump half over the barrier knocking over a camera tower complete with a camera man. I forget the drivers involved.
