10 Things You Might Have Missed From Last Weekend’s Motorsport Action

It was a busy weekend of motorsport – including Nascar, the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Goodwood Members’ Meeting – so here are 10 things for you to catch up on!

1. Action Express Racing victorious

The 12 Hours of Sebring took place last weekend, with Joao Barbosa, Christian Fittipaldi and Sebastien Bourdais claiming a clear overall victory for Action Express Racing.

The driver’s Coyote-Chevrolet Corvette DP moved into the lead during the second hour and lapped the entire field. It was the second round of the 2015 Tudor United SportsCar Championship season.

2. Other winners at the 12 Hours of Sebring

The PR1/Mathiasen ORECA-Chevrolet FLM09 of Tom Kimber-Smith, Andrew Palmer and Mike Guasch won the Prototype Challenger class, while Jan Magnussen, Antonio Garcia and Ryan Brisco triumphed in GTLM for Corvette Racing. Mario Farnbacher, Ian James and Alex Riberas won the GTD class at the wheel of their No. 23 Team Seattle Porsche 911.

The No. 16 BAR1 Motorsports Prototype Challenge machine was running side-by-side with a rival in the Sebring pit lane when the car struck a Fifty Plus Racing pit crew member. He was tossed into the air but refused to get on a stretcher afterwards and walked away minutes later.

Michael Shank Racing’s Ozz Negri was attempting to pass the Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 when he lost control and smashed into the wall, causing the second full course caution of the 12 Hours of Sebring. Fortunately he was uninjured.

Brad Keselowski led just one lap of Sunday’s Auto Club 400 Nascar Sprint Cup race, but it was the most important one. A late charge following a green-white-checker saw the Team Penske driver take his first victory of 2015, beating Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch.

The Nascar Xfinity series was also in action at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. The race was won by Harvick, who extended his lead to 3.3 seconds following the final lap 122 restart. Brendan Gaughan and rookie Erik Jones completed the top three.

7. Alonso completes medical tests

Fernando Alonso completed crucial medical tests on Sunday, following his F1 testing crash last month. The Spaniard missed the 2015 season opener in Australia. However, it was confirmed on Monday that, subject to a final FIA assessment on Thursday, he will compete for McLaren in this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix.

The 73rd Goodwood Members’ Meeting took place over the weekend. Two cars came together on track, with one incredibly flying over the other.

Sadly a 1955 Mercedes 300 SLS and 1959 Lister-Jaguar Knobbly collided during the Goodwood Members’ Meeting.

Former F1 and Le Mans driver Jochen Mass was at the wheel of the Mercedes during qualifying for the Salvadori Cup when he came across the slowing Lister, which was entering the pits. He slammed on the brakes but could not avoid him. Both drivers were okay. The cars, however, were not.

10. Rea leads the way

World Superbikes debuted in Thailand with two races around the Chang International Circuit. Both were won by Kawasaki Racing’s Jonathan Rea, who extends his lead to 10 points in the championship. Leon Haslam was runner-up in both races.
