10 Things You Might Have Missed From Last Weekend's Motorsport Action

In another busy weekend of motorsport - which included MotoGP, BTCC and Nascar - here are 10 things for you to catch up on:

1. Lorenzo victorious

Jorge Lorenzo secured his first victory of the 2014 MotoGP season last weekend at the Motorland Aragon circuit in Spain. Championship leader Marc Marquez held the early lead, before a rain shower towards the end of the race caused chaos.

Lorenzo pitted for a wet-tyred bike but Marquez and his team-mate Dani Pedrosa tried to stick out the shower. Both fell in the closing stages and they emerged from the pits well down the order. Lorenzo took the win from Aleix Espargaro and Cal Crutchlow.

Misano winner Valentino Rossi crashed out of last weekend’s MotoGP race in the early stages, which prompted him to visit the circuit medical centre. Doctors confirmed that he was concussed and he was then transferred to hospital for precautionary checks.

Despite the local doctor wanting him to stay there overnight, it was confirmed that Rossi discharged himself from hospital on Sunday evening.

3. Two out of three for Plato

Jason Plato took two impressive victories at last weekend’s British Touring Car Championship round at Silverstone. A fourth place finish in race three kept his title hopes alive.

Current leader Colin Turkington scored podiums in all three races and holds a 50-point advantage over Plato in the standings with one round to go. Matt Jackson took the win in what was a frantic final race at Silverstone.

Rob Collard suffered a huge crash in the second Silverstone BTCC race, after contact with Jack Clarke’s Ford Focus. A shaken Collard was taken to hospital for precautionary X-rays but was released later that day.

Jeff Gordon scored his first win at the Dover International Speedway since 2001 when he took the chequered flag at the AAA 400 in first place. Brad Keselowski, who Gordon overtook for the lead with 100 laps to go, was second and Jimmie Johnson finished third.

In the Chase for the Nascar Sprint Cup, 12 drivers advanced to the Contender Round, with A.J. Allmendinger, Kurt Busch, Greg Biffle and Aric Almirola being eliminated.

The Nascar Nationwide Series was also in action at Dover, with Kyle Busch taking the victory – his fifth of the season - after taking the lead just before the half-way stage. Pole-sitter Joey Logano was second, with Chase Elliott in third.

7. Solberg takes the title

Petter Solberg secured the FIA World Rallycross Championship title last weekend in Italy after finishing in third place. The Norwegian finished behind event winner Timmy Hansen and Supercar debutant Richard Goransson.

8. Ekstrom on top at Zandvoort

The DTM series returned to the track at Zandvoort last weekend, with Audi driver Mattias Ekstrom scoring his first victory of the 2014 season. He finished 7.4 seconds ahead of this year’s champion Marco Wittmann, with BMW’s Martin Tomczyk completing the podium.

9. Jump!

Fortunately João Paulo de Oliveira escaped uninjured after two cars – piloted by Andre Lotterer and Takuya Izawa - flew over his head in a Super Formula crash at Sugo in Japan.

A Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 driver was injured in a first lap pile-up at Paul Ricard circuit last weekend. The crash was caused by two drivers completely cutting a corner and colliding as they re-joined.

Ryan Tveter was forced to take avoiding action and his car became airborne after hitting a kerb. He was taken to hospital, before later confirming that a neck strain will keep him out of a car and in a neck brace for 10 days.
