10 Things You Might Have Missed From Last Weekend's Motorsport Action

In another busy weekend of motorsport - which included IndyCar, Nascar and MotoGP - here are 10 things for you to catch up on:

Will Power dominated last weekend’s IndyCar race at the Milwaukee Mile, leading 229 laps to take his third win of the season. Late fuel saving caused Juan Pablo Montoya and Tony Kanaan to close in, but neither could get through. Power eventually won by 2.7 seconds to extend his championship lead with two races remaining. Montoya and Kanaan completed the podium.

The Milwaukee Mile winner had a rather odd excuse for visiting the medical centre after the race. He had to get cream syringed out of his ears after the two other podium finishes pied him in the face,

3. The winning streak comes to an end

Marc Marquez’s run of 10 consecutive race victories came to an end last weekend at Brno, with his Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa taking the win in the Czech Republic. Marquez started from pole but dropped to sixth at the start.

He struggled with the set-up of his bike and was only able to recover to fourth, finishing off the podium for the first time in his MotoGP career. Pedrosa edged out Jorge Lorenzo by four tenths to take his first win of the year, with Valentino Rossi in third.

Jeff Gordon scored his third win of the season last weekend at the Michigan International Speedway. It was his 91st Sprint Cup series victory, finishing ahead of Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano – who led the most laps of anyone (86). Gordon now leads the Sprint Cup standings, ahead of team-mate Dale Earnhardt Jr.

As always in Nascar, there were plenty of crashes over the Pure Michigan 400 race weekend – starting with a big crash for Ryan Truex in practice (above). During the race Kyle Larson found the wall hard, while Danica Patrick’s spin collected several other drivers (below).

During the Nascar Sprint Cup race, Jimmie Johnson’s gear shifter broke and he was forced to try and repair it while competing. During a pit stop his team handed him a set of modified vice grips to attach to the gear shift mechanism. It worked and he was able to change gears, before then charging from 35th to 10th.

The Nascar Nationwide Series was racing at Mid-Ohio last weekend. Despite a late-race fuel issue, Chris Buescher managed to reach the chequered flag to take his first win in the championship. He finished 1.1 seconds clear of Regan Smith, with Brian Scott in third.

8. Wittmann victorious

Marco Wittmann secured his fourth DTM win of the season and edged closer to his maiden title in the series on Sunday at the Nurburgring. The BMW driver finished just ahead of Mike Rockenfeller, with Edoardo Mortara making it two Audis on the podium. Wittmann’s closest title rival Mattias Ekström retired on lap three following contact.

Max Verstappen, who was today announced as a Toro Rosso 2015 F1 driver, edged closer to FIA Formula 3 European Championship leader Esteban Ocon in the standings after taking one race win at the Nurburgring. He retired from race two but finished third in the final event. Antonio Giovinazzi and Lucas Auer took the other two victories, with Ocon finishing sixth, third and registering a DNF in race three.

10. F1 kicks back into life

Last weekend marked the end of the two-week F1 factory shutdown, with the teams returning to work on Monday in preparation for this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix. The summer break is now almost over with just a few days before the cars take to the track at Spa-Francorchamps.
