Rain caused the first IndyCar race of the weekend in Toronto to be postponed until Sunday morning, meaning there would be two 65-lap races in one day as the round was a double-header. It was the right call, with even the safety car struggling to keep on track.

Sebastien Bourdais dominated the morning race on Sunday in Toronto, taking his first win in seven years. He led for most of the race and finished ahead of Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan, who completed the podium.

The chaotic second IndyCar race in Toronto, held on Sunday afternoon, was won by Mike Conway. It took place in tricky and changeable conditions, with the Brit gambling on a late switch to slick tyres just before the final caution. On the restart he moved up the order, taking the lead from Justin Wilson. A multi-car pile-up caused the red flag to be shown, but the race resumed for the final laps with Conway taking his second victory of 2014.

Chase Elliott secures his third Nascar Nationwide Series victory last weekend, after taking the chequered flag at the Chicagoland Speedway in first place. It was his third win of the year and he led 85 laps in total, beating Trevor Bayne by 1.8 seconds. Kyle Larson and Kasey Kahne finished third and fourth.

Brian Scott won the second Nascar Nationwide Series’ $100,000 Dash4Cash bonus at the Chicagoland Speedway, having finished the race in sixth place ahead of his three rivals in the fight for the prize.

Tanner Foust took the Volkswagen Rallycross New York win on Sunday at the Nassau Coliseum. Foust, driving for Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross, beat Nelson Piquet Jr and Ken Block in a close fight to the finish. Scott Speed originally finished second but he was later disqualified for making unapproved car adjustments during the first red flag period.

The bare grandstands and low attendance figures at the German Grand Prix sparked concern from F1 teams and drivers. Despite having a home driver leading the championship and a German team dominating the sport, around 50,000 people attended race day on Sunday – less than half the total spectator capacity of the Hockenheimring.

9. Evans and Coletti take GP2 wins

Mitch Evans took a stunning victory in the GP2 feature race at the Hockenheimring. He swiftly progressed from 15th on the grid and took the lead when Stoffel Vandoorne pitted on lap 25. The two battled closely in the final laps but Evans stayed ahead to win the 200th GP2 race ever.

The second race on Sunday morning was equally dramatic, with pre-race rain spicing things up. Several drivers opted to stay on dry tyres and despite initially slipping back, the call eventually paid off for Stefano Coletti, who won with Felipe Nasr second and Vandoorne third.

10. Gamer wins in GP3

Sunday’s second GP3 race in Germany was dominated by Jann Mardenborough. He has gone from gamer to racing driver in just a few years, having won the GT Academy talent search. He also competes in endurance racing, and proved that he’s one to watch by emerging victorious in race two, finishing ahead of Dino Zamparelli.

Saturday’s first race was won by Marvin Kirchhofer. He took victory on home soil after starting from pole position, finishing ahead of championship leader Alex Lynn and his Carlin team-mate Emil Bernstorff.
