McLaren F1 junior driver Stoffel Vandoorne made quite an impression over the weekend by winning on his debut in the highly competitive GP2 series. Racing for ART Grand Prix, he took the lead at the start of the Bahrain feature race and managed to hold off the challenges of Julian Leal and Jolyon Palmer to take victory.

2. Spun into the wall

Axcil Jefferies' first race weekend in GP2 got off to a disastrous start. He finished Sunday's sprint race in 21st place after a monumental effort by the Trident team's mechanics to repair his car after a big crash during the feature race on Saturday. Kimiya Sato hit the back of the Zimbabwean's car on the high-speed run to turn four, which spun him into the wall. Fortunately he emerged unscathed.

Toro Rosso F1 driver Jean-Eric Vergne revealed over the weekend that he was hospitalised between the Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix due to complications related to his weight loss. He is one of several drivers trying to lose a few kilograms due to F1's new minimum weight limit. Drivers are taking extreme weight loss measures - Adrian Sutil said prior to the Bahrain Grand Prix that he wasn't going to race with a water bottle to make the car lighter.

4. Drama at Winton 400

The V8 Supercar races at the Winton Raceway were as dramatic as ever. Fabian Coulthard won a chaotic opening round of the weekend, before Lee Holdsworth took the first victory for the Erebus Mercedes AMG team in race two. Mark Winterbottom became the sixth different winner in 2014 after finishing first in race three.

5. Driver handed fine for V8 Supercar rant

Russell Ingall was fined $15,000 by V8 Supercars following a post-race rant about officials. During an interview following a drive-through penalty, he branded the stewards "dopey idiots" and "peanuts", amongst the expletives.

6. Kimi stops fireworks with a look

Raikkonen's post-Bahrain Grand Prix interview was rudely interrupted by a fireworks display, but he appeared to stop them with just one disapproving look. Well, he is the Iceman after all.

8. Fiery crash for Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. crashed heavily during the Duck Commander 500 after running his front-left tyre onto the infield grass. With no control of the car, he went straight on and into the barrier, with the car bursting into flames.
