This 11,000-Mile Toyota Supra Sold For An Absurd $173,600

An A80 sold at an RM Sotheby's auction for the equivalent of over £130,000, smashing the amount fetched for a similar car a few weeks ago

If you thought the madness of the modern classic car market had reached its peak when a 7111-mile Toyota Supra sold for $121,000, we have some troubling news for you.

The 1994 example has been trumped by another A80 of the same vintage, and quite spectacularly - the car you see here sold at the recent RM Sotheby’s Amelia Island sale for $173,600. To put that ridiculous figure in context, it’s enough to buy three examples of the new A90 Supra in the USA.

In good old-fashioned British Pound Sterling meanwhile, that figure is £133,520 at current exchange rates, enough for an Audi R8 Performance with many options added. If you feel like you want to stop the world and get off right now, we perfectly understand.

With 11,200 miles on the clock, it’s actually travelled a little further than the $121,000 A80 from a few weeks ago. It’s a twin-turbo model with a manual gearbox, as you’d probably expect given the bonkers hammer price.

The car was originally sold new in Illinois, where it stayed for “at least two years” and clocked just over half its present mileage. About a year ago it was imported to Switzerland.

The RM Sotheby’s auction page concludes that “It remains in brilliant and largely original condition throughout”. And indeed, it does look immaculate. But $173,600? Really?

And think: had the F&F movie never been created or not featured the A80, prices would still be reasonable. But no. Thankfully there are so many other JZ models Toyota built that are still somewhat affordable (Lexus GS, Toyota Soarer (not entirely sure but I’m pretty sure), to name some)

I feel as if the logic for the purchase of Supras at these prices is very flawed. Supras are worth a lot because of Fast and Furious and tuning capabilities, but these Supras are mint examples and untouched. So unless their intent is to molest a clean example it doesn’t make much sense to buy Supras for this much

What if you want to collect a mint supra tho. I mean there are loads of people out there who just collect just for the sake of collecting. Example being the loads of people who hoard low mileage 80’s hondas

1950 Mercury Coupe

Most people buy Supras to modify them. Because let’s be honest, stock Supra isn’t that great. It’s a relatively heavy car with 300 HP. So if you want to modify it it doesn’t really make much sense to pay 173k for it. You may as well buy an NA one, those are much cheaper.

People these days buy stock surpas as a stock one is worth more than a modified one

But now car collectors are buying them, because at this rate theyre becoming a very valuable investment. The supra buyers buying these mint condition ones are never going to do anything other than let it sit and watch their money grow

Yay, someone gets it! And regarding the price it is another classic ‘greater fool’ example. No one really thinks they are worth that much. A lot of great cars that skyrocket in value are not worth a lot, Supra is not even great as you rightly acknowledged. Its just buying mint examples and expecting some time down the road prices will be even more ridiculous. And sales like that dont help, people who don’t know supras will think that they are actually worth something and prices will be going up. God I wish this stupidity bubble will blow but that is unlikely.

Buy low, sell high, this is investments 101. With all the hype around the Supra at this time, now is the time to sell high.
