At around a mile wide and with speeds approaching 200mph, it rivaled the devastating tornado that hit the region in 1999. So far the death toll stands at 91, with local hospitals treating around 120 people.
President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in the state, while search and recovery teams continue to work in the area. Here's a look at what they're up against...
