The 205mph Alpina B5 Touring Is The M5 Wagon BMW Won't Make
We’re almost certain a Touring version of the incoming new M5 isn’t going to happen. In fact, there isn’t even an M550i Touring yet either, and BMW hasn’t said if it’ll build one. So what’s a BMW-aligned fast estate fanatic to do? Call Alpina, that’s what.
The company - whose cars are actually built on BMW’s own production lines - revealed its new B5 model at the Geneva Motor Show this week. You can buy the G30 5-series based machine as a saloon (below), but clearly the one you want is the Touring.
Its 4.4-litre V8 puts out 600bhp and 590lb ft of torque, making 0-62mph possible in just 3.5 seconds. Oh, and it’ll do 205mph. No electronic limiter nonsense going on here.
The vast quantities of power and torque are fed to all four wheels via a tweaked version of BMW’s xDrive system, and the B5 also has a rear axle steering system.
It sports the usual subtle but effective Alpina accoutrements on the outside, with 20-inch multi-spoke wheels filling the arches, and lower splitter added at the front. And don’t worry, those decals are optional, if you’re not a fan.
Like the look of this? Prices haven’t been revealed just yet, but expect it to sit somewhere between £90,000 - £100,000. If you fancy something a little cheaper and more sensible, a 400bhp, oil-burning ‘D5’ is on the way too.
