The 221bhp Peugeot 508 First Edition Is Tomorrow's Ford Mondeo ST220
The Germanically handsome new Peugeot 508 is set to arrive with a bang thanks to a 200-car limited edition that’s pretty much guaranteed to be an interesting classifieds unicorn someday.
The First Edition comes with a truck-load of kit, like a massaging driver’s seat, fully-automated parking, night vision and a mix of high-grade leather and Alcantara. It gets some aesthetic revisions as well, like a chequered gloss black front grille and 19-inch wheels.
This is exactly the sort of thing we’ll be writing classifieds stories about in 15 years when depreciation and mileage bottom-out its value. Effectively, what you’re looking at here is tomorrow’s Ford Mondeo ST220…
Two engines are available; a 177bhp diesel and a 221bhp turbocharged petrol, both of which have new eight-speed automatic transmissions. The petrol is the one we’ll be looking out for in years to come.
Both cars come with a wireless smartphone charging pad, a 360-degree camera system and something called the ‘Inviolability Pack,’ which sounds so awesome we’re not even sure we want to ruin the magic by Googling it to find out what it means. Spoiler alert: it’s a package of protective measures like bump strips to help prevent everyday damage. Magic ruined.
Early birds who jump onto the First Edition hype train pronto will benefit from a free set of Focal wireless headphones and four years of free servicing, which isn’t strictly true because it’s a four-year-equivalent service contract, so if you pile the miles on and need two services a year, your servicing will only be free for two years.
Deliveries for the First Edition will start in October, and Peugeot asks a £250 deposit either online or via one of its dealers to reserve one of the 200. There’s no word on prices yet, but expect this high-spec version to creep well into Audi territory.
The ordinary car may have less kit as standard, but we also expect it to be much cheaper. Either way, it’s hopefully an interesting new entry to the repmobile sector.
