Allright. Now everyone understand that you should not put stress on engine during first something mile/km. On the other hand all ‘’master drivers’’ say that you need to ‘’open up’’ the engine in order the car to accelerate more quickly and reach higher speeds especially in long roads and the way to do that is you do the opposite of the warnings about break-in like flooring and cruising in high rpm’s. I don’t know how does this affect the engine to reach it’s optimal performance if the engine is ‘’virgin’’? What is the way to do it?

First say 500 miles you break in, warm it up, change gears, vary your speed, let the brakes and tires sort of rub and clean themselves off of their protective film. Next 500 -on longer trips- progress towards more spirited shifting, since the pistons are now seated and rings sealed, it is now time to let the chain driven cams run in. This means shifting later, using more of the engines power band, not avoiding engine braking and varying load. Then the last part which I call sealing the deal. You discover, what the engine has to give. NA gasoline engines should be ready to give you their full performance after say 2000 miles of proper run in. So in the last part, you confirm what the car is capable of. That might involve a nice 0-62 run, a bit of redline-licking in 3rd and so on.

So let me get the straight…Youre not supposed to go above a certain RPM, not supposed to go full throttle, not supposed to take too long of trips, not supposed to take too short of trips….and they say cars are better than girlfriends… xD

Well…this stinks, because i put brand new 17” Fuzion UHPs on my Mustang, didnt break them in, and the next morning drove right to the dragstrip 60 miles away from my house to do the SCCA season finale autocross event. Between autocrossing and two days of back-and-forth between my apt and the drag strip…so much for a gentle break-in ^^;

I watched a short film on the production of a GT-R a while ago that showed the final stage of quality control as an employee racing around a small track flat out. I have read many a NASIOC forums debating over manufacturer’s bench testing engines, and have always been curious about this process. Maybe you could do a video that shows differences between racing teams and performance companies like Cosworth, compared to consumer manufacturers. Thanks for all that you do Engineering Explained !!
