Breaking the 200mph barrier is a dream that sits atop many a petrolhead’s automotive bucket list. However, unattainable as it may seem for us mere mortals - conquering the double-ton is actually a whole lot cheaper than you might think. Here are six cars that - with a long enough stretch of derestricted autobahn and a hefty tailwind - will top 200mph without any fettling whosoever, save for the removal of a speed-limiter or two.

BMW M5

The fact of the matter is this: nowadays, you can pick up a used E60 M5 for as little as £13,000. Yes, 13. Odds are it’ll have lead a less than salubrious lifestyle over its undoubtedly many thousands of miles, but the fact remains - this is a V10, 500bhp four-door car which, with the electronic nanny removed, will top 200mph. Spend £20k on a well looked after example - or better still, an estate - and you’ll be laughing all the way to the Gendarmerie.

Mercedes SL55 AMG

From wailing V10 to bellowing V8 - the SL55 AMG is as much of an aural sensation as it is a usable motor car. Its colossal 5.5-litre V8 is good for 510bhp, and 202mph de-restricted. £30,000 nets you a good, post 2006 example with all the trimmings - including that trick folding hard-top. Pony-up another few grand and you could nab an SL65, however. With 604bhp from its blown V12 (of which a derivative is still used by Pagani), you could be looking at speeds upwards of 210mph...

Bentley Continental GT

Along with the Merc’, the most cultured way to reach 200. Ok, nearly. Early Continental GTs could officially manage 198mph, though a welcome gust of wind and a gentle downward slope should be sufficient to see you smash through the 200mph mark. If you’re feeling brave, and don’t mind people muttering “Oh look, there goes Coleen Rooney” as you waft past - £28,000 or thereabouts is all you’ll need. Gulp.

Porsche 996 Turbo

For the enthusiast in all of us. 996 Turbos start at £19,000, although you’ll want to spend a tad more to find one with the sought-after “X50 Upgrade” - bigger turbos and a dose more power. The cheapest we found was £21,000. 911s aren’t about outright speed, and you’ll have as much fun hurling ‘em down B-roads as you will approaching the rev limiter in top. They’re not the prettiest iteration of the 911 - but who cares when you’re having so much fun?

Chevrolet Corvette ZO6

Find your sister attractive? Then have we got the car for you. With its 505bhp, 7.0-litre V8, given enough space the Z06 should get pretty damn close to 200mph. It may disintegrate in the process, mind… £32,000 is the going rate for a low mileage left-hooker, but judging by what we’ve read, we wouldn’t recommend using one as your daily driver. Looks good, though...

Ford Mustang GT500

The new Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang taking on the famous Goodwood Hillclimb

If you can’t abide by the thought of buying a well used performance car - given they may’ve once been treated with disdain and contempt - then this is your answer, the GT500. It’s the most powerful production V8 out there - with 662bhp - and should be good for the double-ton given a long, straight road. The best bit? It’s brand new and is surprisingly tech-laden considering it’s essentially a muscle car. £36,000 plus import fees.
