690bhp Sport Quattro Is Audi's Most Powerful Car Ever
Hybrid supercars are like buses - you wait ages for one to turn up and suddenly there are loads of 'em. After the BMW i8 surfaced yesterday, here's an altogether sexier and more potent rival from up the road at Audi. The Sport Quattro concept drives all four wheels with a plug-in petrol electric drivetrain, but its loony levels of power might just shock you...
While the BMW gets a dinky three-cylinder engine to maximise its economy, the Sport Quattro borrows the twin-turbo V8 from the Audi RS6. That means 552bhp - nearly as much as a Ferrari 458 - but Audi didn't stop there. An electric motor takes the total output up to 690bhp, matching Lambo's Aventador. It's one serious hybrid.
The downside is weight. At 1850kg, the Sport Quattro is chunkier than Audi's Q5 SUV. Performance hardly suffers though, and it manages to combine a 189mph top speed and 3.7 second 0-62mph time with 113mpg fuel economy. Amazing eh? And a load of carbon bits and bobs and a much simpler interior than normal help cut weight in important areas. Just check out its cockpit...
If you want one, though, you can't have one. Yet. It's a concept and Audi hasn't confirmed whether it'll make production or not, and if it does, expect to pay as much as £150,000 for one. Audi's most powerful car ever will also be its most expensive. But its name carries some über-cool heritage - check out the sliding, hissing, growling, flame-spitting Group B rally monster it calls 'Dad' below.
Our only issue is this: should the Sport Quattro name belong to a heavy hybrid supercar? Or does it need a classic five-cylinder soundtrack with such an iconic badge on its pert rump?
