7 Memorable Moments From This Year's Gumball 3000

As Gumball 3000: Riga to Mykonos draws to a close, we're taking a look at the rally's best moments

This year’s Gumball 3000 spectacular started in Riga, Latvia, with a veritable feast of exotic cars on the starting grid including a LaFerrari Aperta, a McLaren 675 LT Spider and… a pair of Smart ForTwos, piloted by Mario and Luigi. Obviously.

From here, the 2017 Gumballers would drive around 3000 miles to Mykonos, Greece, threading through Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Albania and more in the process.

Having some fun with the LaF Aperta! Where do you think we should try this again?

Many LaFerrari Apertas will - sadly - end up locked away in private collections, rarely turning a wheel in anger. Thankfully for us, that isn’t the case with this particular The Ferrari Aperta, with entrepreneur and mega petrolhead Josh Cartu happily laying on a noisy, smoky display in Budapest, Hungary.

It wouldn’t be Gumball without David Hasselhoff, would it?

If you’re in a supercar convoy rumbling through Croatia, it’d be rude not top stop at the headquarters of the people who make one of the world’s fastest EVs. Inside Rimac’s Sveta Nedelja facility, the 1341bhp Concept One hypercar is meticulously built by hand. It’s a fascinating place.

The Team ERS F430 made it all the way down to Mykonos, but not entirely without mechanical maladies. It had a habit of getting rather hot, experienced several tyre issues and drank a heinous amount of oil.

The most interesting thing we learn here? The oil pressure gauge on an F430 looks like it’s been stolen from an early 90s hatchback…

Albania proved tricky for the 2017 Gumballers for a number of reasons, including the road surfaces, which had a habit of disappearing entirely. Still, the sight of a supercar convoy rolling over a glorified dirt track is an awesome one, don’t you think?

#teamers have made the ferry to mykanos

Here’s the glorious sight of 150 elite cars worth an estimated £30 million queuing up to catch the ferry to Mykonos - Gumball 2017’s final destination. Most of the cars you can see - and several that you can’t - were covered by broker PK Partnership and custom underwritten by specialist insurer ERS.

ERS didn’t just cover Gumball - they dispatched a Ferrari F430 piloted by sales director, Alex Hardy and motoring enthusiast and journalist Jonny Smith to tackle the rally to see exactly what makes it so special and get a driver’s eye view. Who says motor insurance can’t be exciting?
