8 Epic Cars With The World's Coolest Headlights

Before LEDs and HIDs, car makers put serious cool into their headlight designs. Here are the best of the best

8. BMW 8-series

Arguably the coolest BMW ever made (it's this or the E30) the E31 8-series was the marque's flagship model from 1989. Its sleek body, big engine line-up and those headlights made the '8 the rich businessman's weapon of choice. A 550bhp M8 version was planned but eventually scrapped due to lack of customer demand.

7. 1968 Impala SS

One of America's best-selling cars to date also features one of the coolest headlight designs in history. Pop the lights and quadruple beams appear from behind the front-end's slatted grille.

6. Citroen DS

The DS was one of the most innovative cars of its time. Along with its 'magic carpet' hydraulic suspension, the DS also pioneered directional headlights. As you'll see in the video, the direction of the lights is controlled by wires and rods, which are connected to the steering system.

5. 1967 Camaro RS

Produced between 1966-69, the original Camaro was available with three main trim levels - RS, SS and Z/28. This RS appearance package featured these brilliantly cool hidden headlights. SS and Z/28 models got power upgrades and revised suspension rates for enhanced handling.

4. 1984 Chevrolet Corvette

The pop-up headlights you'll see on an '84 Corvette epitomise engineering for the sake of cool. Instead of popping up in usual bottom-up fashion, these eyes flip a full 180 degrees. Epic.

3. 1969 Dodge Charger

What makes this car's headlights so damn cool isn't the fact that the grille disappears in Impala SS style, rather the way in which one side opens first, followed by the next. Who said lazy eye wasn't sexy?

2. 1973 Opel GT

If you've never seen this wonderful little car, you're very welcome. The two-seat Opel GT was produced between 1968–1973 and was powered by either a dinky 1.1-litre engine with 67bhp, or the more popular 102bhp 1.9. On top of its front engine, rear-drive layout, the GT's cool was topped off by a pair of terrifically manly pop-around lights. Just listen to that thunk!

1. 1965 Buick Riviera

There could only be one winner for world's coolest headlight design, and the Riviera bags it with ease. Look up the word 'bling' in the dictionary and this car is what you'll find. Watch and be amazed.
