8 Memorable Moments From The German Grand Prix

After taking pole position on Saturday, Nico Rosberg was unchallenged throughout the 10th race of the 2014 season. He eventually finished 20 seconds clear of Valtteri Bottas, who equalled his best F1 result.

Lewis Hamilton started last after he crashed out of qualifying in the first segment after a brake disc failure, and stormed through the field to a fantastic third. Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso completed the top five. Here are eight memorable moments:

1. Upside down

Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen got the German Grand Prix off to a dramatic start when they collided at turn one on the first lap. Massa was pitched into a barrel-roll following the contact, and despite escaping unharmed was forced to retire. Magnussen continued, battling to a ninth place finish.

2. Hamilton's charge

Hamilton made up 17 positions during the 67 lap race, pulling off some strong but aggressive overtakes. Turn six was his favourite spot to make a move, although some of them did involve contact (including passes on Kimi Raikkonen and Jenson Button).

3. A fiery exit

Daniil Kvyat’s race ended prematurely on lap 44 after the rear of his car dramatically burst into flames.

4. Some fantastic battles

Throughout the German Grand Prix we were treated to some fantastic duels, particularly during the pit stop phases. It was great to see such close but largely fair racing, although of course it wasn’t all clean.

5. Spinning Sutil

Adrian Sutil spun on lap 47 at the final corner after an apparent power problem. His engine then failed to switch back on and he was forced to leave his car stranded on the circuit as the marshals ran to retrieve it. Strangely the safety car was not deployed.

6. Rosberg domination

Rosberg didn’t put a foot wrong throughout the race, gradually extending his lead and pulling off his strategy perfectly. It was a popular result in front of his home fans, although the grandstands were half empty.

7. Bottas impresses again

Valtteri Bottas is proving exactly why Williams promoted him to a race seat last season, and that he is definitely a star of the future. The Finn equalled his best result to score his third consecutive podium, finishing just ahead of Hamilton in second.

8. A close finish

Daniel Ricciardo ended the race just one tenth behind Fernando Alonso after a very close and intense battle in the closing stages. “That was awesome fun, one of my most enjoyable races I’ve had. Fernando is known to be a tough racer and I thought who better to have a good fight with,” Ricciardo said afterwards.
