The Mercedes dominance was broken by Red Bull Racing at the Canadian Grand Prix, after Daniel Ricciardo benefitted from technical problems for both Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton to take his maiden victory in F1.

The race ended in dramatic fashion after Felipe Massa and Sergio Perez collided at high speed on the final lap. Both hit the wall hard but thankfully emerged unscathed. Rosberg held on to second, while Hamilton retired, with Vettel finishing in third. Button and Hulkenberg completed the top five. Here are eight memorable moments from the race:

1. A popular win

Ricciardo became the fourth Australian driver to win a Formula 1 race when he took the chequered flag in first place at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. It was a thrilling end to the race, after he passed Perez and Rosberg in the closing stages to take the victory. He never stops smiling and seems like one of the nicest guys in the sport, so it was a hugely popular win.

2. Trouble for Mercedes

The two Mercedes drivers had looked set to dominate the Canadian Grand Prix with a close fight for the win, but it all started to go wrong for Hamilton and Rosberg on lap 36, when the former suffered a “high-voltage control electronics failure” which caused a permanent loss of MGU-K (part of the vehicle’s energy recovery system) drive.

Rosberg’s car then developed the same issue on the following lap. Hamilton exited the race 10 laps later due to overheating brakes, but his team-mate managed to battle on in impressive style to finish second and take home 18 points, giving the German a 22 point championship lead.

3. Drama on the final lap

Perez was battling with brake problems of his own as he crossed the line to start the final lap of the race, with Massa in close pursuit. As the two drivers approached turn one they made contact, which pitched them both heavily into the wall.

Both were taken to hospital for precautionary checks and they were discharged shortly after. Perez was deemed to have been to blame by the stewards, who have him a five-place grid penalty for the next race.

4. A close call

Vettel narrowly avoided being collected by the out-of-control Massa and Perez at turn one. It was very, very close.

5. What a gent

Ricciardo asked over the radio if Perez and Massa were okay after he took the chequered flag, before he felt like he could celebrate the victory. Yet more evidence of what a genuinely nice chap he is.

Rosberg managed to pull off this impressive save just after his first pit stop. Nicely done.

7. Miserable Marussia

You have to feel for the Marussia team. After the highs of Monaco – where the outfit scored its first F1 points – the team’s Canadian Grand Prix was over after just four corners. Max Chilton lost control of his car at turn three and collided with his team-mate, who was pitched into the turn four wall.

Both were forced to retire and Chilton was given a three-place penalty for Austria, which is the next race on the schedule. It also meant that his record-breaking run of 25 consecutive race finishes has come to a close.

8. Get off me

Hamilton and Rosberg seemed to be in good spirits when being interviewed prior to the race. That was until the former decided that he would lean on the latter. Look at that glare.
