The 8.8-Sec 1/4-Mile Tesla Roadster Will Get Even Faster

Being able to crush any other production car on the drag strip isn't enough, apparently, as Elon Musk hints at a faster incarnation of the new Roadster, which already hits 100mph in 4.2 seconds...

Well, this is something to think about. The Tesla Roadster that was unveiled out of nowhere at the semi truck launch last week, the one that can hit 60mph in 1.9 seconds, is the base performance model. There’s potentially a faster one coming.

Why on earth you’d need something faster than a car that can already comfortably blow away the likes of the McLaren 720S and Bugatti Chiron on the drag strip, we haven’t quite worked out, yet. Because you can, maybe?

Anyway, that’s beside the point. An 8.8-second quarter-mile will have Dodge Demon owners crying over their harnesses, but still Elon Musk wants more… albeit acknowledging that a road-legal car that fast might genuinely offend the authorities.
Autocar has quoted him as saying:

“The point of doing this is to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars. Driving a gasoline sports car is going to feel like driving a steam engine with a side of quiche [compared to this].

“This will be the first time that any production car has broken nine seconds in the quarter-mile. [An upgrade is] just a question of safety. Rocket tech applied to a car opens up revolutionary possibilities.”

Yep, he did just say rocket tech. We can only assume he doesn’t mean that. We can’t imagine the law would appreciate actual rockets being installed in cars…

The cost:performance value is outrageous. This makes me fear that young, inexperienced drivers with more money than brains will buy these and start starting electrical fires left and right.

That’s the second time he’s done that.
Why?
