9 Amazing Le Mans GTE Cars That Need To Exist
1. Audi RS7
Audi has been awesome at dominating LMP1 at Le Mans in recent years (well, until Porsche turned up and spoilt the party), so why not give the competition what for a little further back in the grid too?
2. Mazda RX Vision Concept
The mighty Mazda 787B was the last rotary-engined car to win at Le Mans, with the Wankel outlawed at the end of the 1991 season. But wouldn’t it be great to see the rotary engine back at la Sarthe, screaming down the Mulsanne straight?
3. Porsche 918
With the 918 out of production at Porsche already filling the grid with 911s of different abilities and the dominating 919 Hybrids at the front, this is one of the least plausible cars here. But hey, it looks amazing in a Martini livery and with a 911 GT1-style long tail aero package, so we don’t care one bit.
4. Bentley EXP10 Concept
This is a car we could actually see happen. A production version is on the way, and Bentley has already been fielding its Continental GT in numerous championships for years - the EXP10 could easily end up being its successor on the track. And who knows, maybe Bentley might create a GTE-spec version to take on the World Endurance Championship.
5. Ford Mustang GT
Having seen a race-spec Mustang charging around the Nurburgring N24 last month, this is an idea I can get behind. Although with the GT knocking around - which nabbed class pole at Le Mans yesterday - a Mustang GTE car really isn’t on the cards.
6. Aston Martin DB11
The old DBR9 is one of the best sounding race cars ever, so this one gets a big thumbs up from us. Especially in that Gulf livery.
7. Jaguar F-Type
Yes, cigarettes are bad, cigarette advertising is bad, but come on - how can you not love seeing a bewinged F-Type in the classic Silk Cut livery?
8. McLaren 675 LT
The 650S is already a force to be reckoned with in championships like Blancpain, so the idea of its big brother appearing in WEC’s GTE class is a cool one, however implausible! Bonus points for the McLaren F1-inspired Fina livery.
9. BMW i8
We’re unlikely to see an i8 race car of any kind for the foreseeable, but there’s nothing wrong with dreaming.
Morgan Three Wheeler (Garage 56)
At this point it seems Car Wow’s renderer jumped the shark, imagining Morgan’s Three Wheeler as a Garage 56 racer, with a Nissan GT-R engine at the front. Which would probably make for the most terrifying racing car ever made.
Bonus: Porsche 918 with Gulf livery
And finally, here’s another 918, but wearing the iconic Gulf livery. Because why not.
Which one of these is your favourite?
