9 Unmissable Highlights Of The Goodwood FoS

We run you through the best bits of Goodwood 2013

This year's Goodwood Festival of Speed was bigger (more than 185,000 of us attended), better, faster and hotter than it's ever been since the event kicked off in 1993 (happy 20th!). To celebrate, here are nine FoS highlights we hope you didn't miss.

1. Porsche's striking statue

To mark 50 years of the Porsche 911, crowds were greeted by this astonishing Porsche statue. Each prong (the foundations of which go 20 feet deep into the ground) is topped off not with a lightweight replica, rather a mechanically fit Porsche 911 from the marque's own museum in Germany. The blue 911 on the left is the original 1963 car (flat-six air-cooled 2.0-litre with 128bhp). In the middle sits the yellow 1973 RS model (208bhp 2.7-litre), while the right prong houses the new 911 (991) Carrera 4S with 395bhp.

2. Ford SuperVan 3

The FoS doesn't discriminate against vans (as long as they're extremely fast) which is why it was great to see Ford's own SuperVan 3 take to the hill at the hands of Touring Car driver Anthony Reid. The 1994 Transit is powered by a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 Ford Cosworth engine, which produces 295bhp. Top speed? A very respectable 150mph.

3. Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak

Away from Pikes Peak domination in Colorado, the 875bhp twin-turbo V6 T16 took to the hill climb circuit at Goodwood. Despite setting a time of 47.32sec for the 1.16-mile course (the record stands at 41.6sec set by Nick Heidfeld in the McLaren MP4-13 in 1999) this was only quick enough for second place on the weekend.

4. Fastest car up the hill

Posting a competition-destroying time of 45.95sec was Justin Law in his iconic Silk Cut Jaguar XJR8/9 from 1987.

5. 'Hemi Under Glass' wheelie dragster

American drag racer Bob Riggle again wowed crowds at Goodwood in his 1500bhp ‘Hemi Under Glass’ 1965 Plymouth Barracuda.

6. World's most powerful car

8000hp dragster

By far the fastest thing (including the Red Arrows) at Goodwood was this 8000hp dragster. Driver Jason Phelps performed 2 burnouts each day over the three days (Friday-Sunday). It's reported that the dragster's fuel economy is 60 gallons per mile, meaning it was unable to complete a full lap without refuelling.

Closing the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Sunday was a breathtaking display by the RAF Red Arrows. Flying just feet (as close as four feet) apart at hundreds of miles an hour, crowds were treated to the perfect ending to a brilliant weekend of motorsport, sun and plenty of bhp.
