Last week, we brought you the news that the Liberal Democrats had proposed a ban on all petrol and diesel cars by 2040.

The proposal – which aims to drastically reduce carbon emissions – would mean millions of cars being taken off our roads in favour of super-low emissions vehicles such as hybrids and EVs. Fossil fuels would, however, be permitted for use in HGVs.

While we in the office deemed this proposal to be ludicrous, we thought it only fair to let you have your say. After just four days and 888 votes, the results were conclusive:

As you can see, 851 of us (96 per cent) do not support the proposed ban, while 37 people (four per cent) were in favour.

Even CT writer and electric car enthusiast Antony Ingram had the following to say of the proposal:

'Speaking as someone who actually *likes* electric vehicles etc, I STILL think it's a barmy idea. And I wouldn't be sticking around in the UK to witness such a thing happen...'

So there you have it, Lib Dems. The majority has spoken and we're all in agreement that you guys need to spend your energy on proposals that are A) realistic and B) more popular than this nonsense.
