The Accord Type-R Gives You VTEC Kicks With Less Rice For Just £3k

We spotted lots of Accord Type-Rs at last weekend's Japfest. Here's why you should buy one

One of the best things about big car shows is seeing a lot of cars you don't spot quite so often on the road. At last weekend's Japfest, one such car that caught my eye was the Honda Accord Type-R. I'd simply forgotten it existed, but seeing several of them (including the one below), I was reminded that these cars offer a lot of performance for the money.

Under the bonnet of the Type-R'd Accord, you get a 2.2-litre H22A7 four-pot producing a useful 209bhp. 0-62mph takes a decent 7.2 seconds, but of course, it'll feel faster than that, once VTEC kicks in (yo), of course. As is the case with these sort of engines, you really do have to rev them hard to extract all the performance, but with a screaming 8000rpm red line, you won't mind at all.

With good suspension and the power going to front wheels via a limited-slip differential, Accord Type-Rs are very good when it comes to the handling stakes. For the Type-R, the unremarkable looking Accord was given a handsome makeover, including new wheels, sideskirts and an optional dirty great spoiler on the boot.

Spoiler aside, with that four-door saloon body and subtle styling, it's a much more discreet and practical way of getting your Type-R VTEC kicks than from something like an Integra or S2000.

If all that sounds appealing, this one could be worth a look. It's done a reasonable 107,000 miles and has full service history.
