Alfa Romeo Is Planning An F1-Derived 641bhp Hybrid Giulia Coupe

Alfa Romeo is looking to blow its two-door German rivals right out of the water with a staggering power output from a clever new F1-derived hybrid system
Alfa Romeo Is Planning An F1-Derived 641bhp Hybrid Giulia Coupe

Alfa Romeo is planning a two-door Giulia coupe with an F1-derived Energy Recovery System (ERS) and as much as 641bhp, according to reports. Please be real, etc.

The baseline for the staggering power output – just 20 ponies short of a Ferrari 488 – would come from the 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 already used in the likes of the Giulia Quadrifoglio.

The four-door is already a bit pretty

If it works in the same way as in F1, the performance-oriented ERS system would most likely harvest normally-wasted heat energy from the exhaust and brakes, store it in a small-ish battery and deploy it when needed, to increase the dose of speed.

A smaller, less powerful version is under development, too, based on the 276bhp turbocharged four-pot and good for 345bhp overall.

The two-door car would get new bodywork throughout, and could even get a new nose to differentiate it from the four-door Giulia. A range of familiar combustion engines would be offered in cheaper models, including the 276bhp four-cylinder turbo on its own.

The old GTV badge could be resurrected for the sleek and stylish Italian, imagined in the render at the top by our good buddy X-Tomi Design. It could also be called the Giulia Sprint. Either way, a two-door Giulia with 641bhp would be utterly bonkers. We already love it.

Genuine curiosity, not meant to be a snarky reply.

What are some other FCA produced coupes with KERS?

Classic Alfa. Ambitious plans but how likely will it actually come to fruition?

Nice idea, but why a Gulia Coupé rather than a bespoke sports coupe like an F-Type Jag/911 rival?

Because cost optimizing.

And because it would never sell. Alfa already has enough trouble selling the Alfa as it is

Thank god they don’t make a bigger saloon like BMW, Mercedes and Audi do. It means hey can just make a car as fast as possible, without worrying about it being faster than it’s big brother.
