Aston Martin Just Dropped The New Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake And Speedster

Take a good look because you might never see it again: just 28 of the spectacular Vanquish Zagato Speedsters will be made, with 99 Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brakes also confirmed to complete a family of four

If you’d told us yesterday that we’d soon be seeing a car that we wanted even more than we want the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Coupe and Volante, we’d have laughed at you and walked off. But that’s exactly what’s happened, with the announcement of two absolutely spectacular new spin-offs: the Vanquish Zagato Speedster and Shooting Brake.

The two jaw-droppers, the latter of which isn’t fully revealed in the photos Aston has sent us, join the Coupe and Volante versions of Zagato’s modified Vanquish, but the two new boys are surely even more desirable than their kin. Luckily for Aston Martin and Zagato, the mere 99 examples each of the Coupe and Volante have already sold out – otherwise there might have been a few swapped orders on the cards.

Let’s cover the Speedster first; the car we can see in all its voluptuous, agonisingly good-looking glory. While the Volante maintains a set of all-but useless rear seats, the Speedster bins them in favour of awesome naked carbonfibre fairings (‘Speed Humps’) behind the two remaining seats, linked by an aerodynamic fin. As design goes… we like. All the body panels are lightweight carbonfibre, too – as with all the Vanquish Zagato cars.

Admittedly there’s something quite F-Type-ish about the rear haunches, but that’s like criticising a pudding because it tastes too much like another perfect dessert you had once. There’s no roof at all, but you do get fetching red ‘Z’ Zagato badges to complement that breathtaking bodywork.

The Speedster will be the rarest of the four-strong Zagato family. It will be made just 28 times, where the other three each total 99 cars. The overall production for the four is capped at 325, so if you’ve bought one and you’re reading this, please do drive it, but don’t crash it.

Naturally, even though the embargo for this story has only just lifted, all 28 Speedsters have already been sold, with deliveries pencilled in for 2018. Prices will be well over £500,000. Some customers have, according to Aston Martin, ordered one of each body style. Ponder that for a second…

Like the Speedster the Shooting Brake is a two-seater, so it’s clearly not built for practicality. Don’t be daft, etc. Like its three brothers it’s based on the 592bhp Vanquish S and the Touchtronic III gearbox. The adaptive damping is fettled differently for each model to account for weight and balance changes, but design cues remain intact.

On the Shooting brake that means a roof that curves into a graceful ‘double bubble’ shape, bookended by a powered tailgate and a tailored luggage set, because why not. Aston hasn’t specifically said that the Shooting Brake has sold out, so if you have many, many large-denomination notes bursting out of your pockets, you might want to place a swift call to your local dealer.
