Choosing a mid-engined supercar is not an easy business. You could have a Lamborghini Huracan Evo - yes, it’s merely an updated version of what is now an old car, but that 5.2-litre V10 is awfully tempting, isn’t it? Ferrari has just revealed the new P8 Tributo, and you certainly shouldn’t discount the McLaren 720S.

As if picking one of these wasn’t already hard enough, Aston Martin is busy working on its own entry to the genre. And it has a familiar name: Vanquish.

Last used for the V12 super GT which was replaced by the DBS Superleggera, the name is back for the Vanquish Vision Concept. It serves as a preview for Aston Martin’s first series production mid-engined car, and it takes clear inspiration from the Valkyrie and AM-RB 003 hypercars.

Technical details are still fairly limited at this stage, although Aston Martin has at least revealed that it’ll be built around a “bespoke bonded aluminium structure” and propelled by Aston’s all-new V6, a clean sheet design which will also power the AM-RB 003. If it’s to go up against the likes of the McLaren 720S and Ferrari F8, it’ll need to push out upwards of 650bhp. Our understanding is that some kind of hybridisation will be involved in giving the Vanquish the power it needs to compete.

It’s still early days for the project, with production not due to start until 2022. Regardless, it’s hard not to get excited about a brand like Aston Martin entering this hotly contested corner of the market for the first time.

Speaking about the Vanquish Vision, Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer said:

“Our first series production rear mid-engined supercar will be a transformational moment for the brand, for it is the car that will propel Aston Martin into a sector of the market traditionally seen as the heartland of luxury sports cars.”

I’m not happy… I hoped for the Vanquish to be another gorgeous GT that makes every other GT look like a shed, rather than an Aston Martin badged 720S look-alike. If they’d given it another name, I would be able to live with it, if this is the name they’ll stick with, I just won’t be able to…
