The prayers of diesel lovers in America have been answered. Perhaps that's a bit strong, but in the diesel-car starved US, we have to be grateful for any oil burners the European market sends our way. Audi announced at the 2009 Detroit show that the A3 hatchback will be available with a 2.0L turbodiesel engine in the US, with a late 2009 debut.
The A3 is the same as always - a five door hatchback, basically a Golf in Audi drag with a much nicer interior. The model was mildy face-lifted in late 2008, and the only other big news besides the diesel is the availability of Quattro AWD with the 2.0L Turbo gas motor, finally.
The diesel engine in the A3 is identical to that of the new turbodiesel VW Jettas - a 2.0L, 16v common rail turbo diesel with piezoelectric injectors. It produces an adequate 140 horsepower, and a tire-spinning 236 lb-ft of torque - perfect for stop and go driving. It will only be available with front wheel drive and Audi's S-Tronic 6 speed. (Audi speak for DSG, VW's corporate dual-clutch gearbox)
The A3 TDI will be an appealing choice, offering sporty driving dynamics and 50+ mpg on the highway, with all the solidity and stability of the regular A3. I personally want one badly. Expect a price tag of around $26,000 when the A3 TDI arrives in September or October of this year.
