Audi Has Built An 85kg, 610bhp Inline-Four
DTM is in for a big change this year. The 4.0-litre, naturally-aspirated V8s have gone, replaced with 2.0-litre inline-four turbos.
But you won’t need to worry about the speed dropping. Quite the opposite: power will actually increase from around 500bhp to 600, while the fuel consumption has reduced to a new mandated maximum of 95kg per hour.
Audi has revealed its own power unit for the new regulations, and it’s a fascinating thing. Despite the addition of the turbocharger and all its related components, Audi’s motorsport bods have come up with something that is half the weight of the old V8.
That means it weighs just 85kg, the minimum weight figure allowed under the ‘Class One’ rules. It’ll be used in eight of Audi’s RS5 silhouette racers, competing against new entrants Aston Martin, and DTM veterans BMW.
All DTM machines this year will have a push to push-to-pass system which briefly raises the power by 30bhp while increasing consumption by 5kg per hour.
Audi Motorsport’s engine development boss Ulrich Baretzky reckons there’s potential for road car relevance here, too. He said:
“In terms of weight and lightweight design – especially in the context of avoiding CO2 emissions – we’re pointing out a few approaches that will hopefully find their way into future road-going vehicles – like in the case of the first TFSI for Le Mans and the TDI.”
The 2019 season begins on 4 May at Hockenheim.

inb4 people wanting it in the A1
*wanting it in anything that isnt already more powerful
Please don’t bomb me with downvotes but can someone tell me what inb4 is? I have heard about it for long time having no idea what it is.
We dont get it in the US so i dont rly care if they would or not
that would be cool
Nah m8 if I was engine swapping an A1 it would be a Hemi
This is actually so cool how they have engineered a 4 cylinder to create more horsepower than a v8
It propably wont last very long though
Not that hard, just requires a very big turbo
OwO
I need this
RIP cooling system
:O
does it fit in my honda?
Probably does
They should stop TORTURING aliens
In 10 years time, there will be a 0.8L two cylinder that produces 1000 hp
Twincharged 200cc single cylinder LMP cars are probably on the way
There’s no replacement for displacem… Oh wait, yes there is.
I feel like DTM (and other series) should go towards electrification rather than downsizing
E.g. rather then ditching V8s in favour of inline 4s, why not make hybrid V8s?
✅ Sound stays as good as before
✅ Fuel efficiency increases
✅ Power output increases (although there is a weight penalty)
✅ More R&D into electric drivetrains that may trickle down to road cars (at this moment in time this is more valuable than R&D in downsized engines which is already high)
Weight.
Might have to do with market demands. Hybrids aren’t that popular anymore. Part of the regular market has moved to fully electric, and the rest is holding on to the combustion. And when we want to keep the combustion, we have to downsize. Plus a V8 Hybrid would be a little overkill wouldn’t it ? Hybrid LMP cars produced crazy power from fewer cylinders, and it was plenty enough
This is a move to Class 1 regulations . Merging the regulations with Super GT’s GT500 class with a few joint races taking place .
Hybrids are expensive and comolicated, and betteries are awful
