Baby Ford Racer Smashes the Nurburgring In 7min 22sec

Ford's baby 1.0-litre 3-pot has been put to very good use in this street-legal racer

A road-legal 1.0-litre Ecoboost Formula Ford race car has spanked the Nürburgring Norschleife in 7min 22sec, the 11th fastest lap time ever recorded by a road-ready car.

The lightweight racer completed the full 12.94-mile lap faster than a 700bhp Lamborghini Aventador, hitting an average speed of 105mph.

Using the same three-pot turbocharged petrol engine you'll find in the Focus, B-Max and now, the revised Fiesta, Ford engineers ditched their wives and girlfriends for months of black magic to extract a whopping 200bhp from the diminutive unit; that's 77bhp more than in the Focus.

To legalise the racer for the road, engineers fitted front and rear mud-flaps, lights, wing mirrors and a horn, as well as a set of road-legal track tyres. Optional extras include a Ford-branded umbrella and a fully-stocked pit crew.

Top speed is said to be 159mph and it'll hit 62mph from standing in “less than four seconds”. It’ll even do 118mpg at a steady 35mph cruise, if that’s your thing...

How much does it cost we hear you ask? We don't know and neither does Ford; there are no plans to build the Formula Ford 1.0-litre, which we think is a crying shame. Who said going green couldn’t be fun?
