Amid all the furore over the Jeremy Clarkson fracas debacle, some news slipped out of the BBC that many might not have seen: the Corporation is going to make a TV drama “based on Grand Theft Auto.” Autoblog cites a press release issued by the BBC yesterday, which contained the intriguing news about “a new drama based on Grand Theft Auto, one of the most extraordinary creative and controversial success stories of our time.”

Before you get excited about the prospect of a real-life version of Trevor running around stealing cars, though, Engadget has reported that the drama will actually revolve around the creation of the GTA franchise, rather than being a TV adaptation of any of the games’ storylines. It’s expected to be a 90-minute one-off feature.

The drama is one small part of the BBC’s extensive new ‘Make It Digital’ initiative, which aims to encourage younger people into tech-related jobs. There’s no exact air date just yet, but regarding the initiative’s output, the BBC says “content will begin to appear from today, building up to a big audience moment in September,” so we may not have that long to wait.
