The BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo Is About To Die

BMW's niche-filling 3-series GT won't live past its current generation, the company's development boss has confirmed
The BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo Is About To Die

It seems the 3-series Gran Turismo was a niche too far for BMW. Having already replaced the sales disappointment that was the 5-series Gran Turismo with the lower, longer6-series GT, it’s now emerged that the 3er GT won’t be replaced when it’s taken off sale.

Speaking to Motoring at the Paris Motor Show - where the new G20 3-series was revealed - global development chief Klaus Frohlich confirmed the imminent demise of the car. “Things are changing…When we did the GT we saw that in demographic change people want to sit a little more upright. But then you saw X1 and X3 you can sit upright and you feel younger,” he said.

The BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo Is About To Die

Yep, it seems the 3-series Gran Turismo is yet another casualty of the SUV age, albeit one we’re not particularly sad about. It seems few are plumping for the ‘halfway house’ solution of the slightly lifted 3-series, with BMW’s extensive range of SUVs proving too tempting for most.

For those wanting a more practical version of the 3-series, however, there will be a ‘Touring’ estate version joining the G20 range soon.

I only have one good memory about this car and it was seeing someone struggle to get something small in the boot of theyr 3 series GT and we packed our weekly shopping in a small skoda fabia and my whole family in it and just laughed at him for not getting anything into his much bigger car

The 3 GT is a fantastic car - we’ve owned one for three years, so I know what I’m talking about. It is a lot longer than the standard 3 Series sedan and also has a longer wheelbase, which means the legroom especially in back is huge. The hatchback allows much easier access to the trunk compared to a sedan, and it’s also quite a lot bigger than the one in the Touring. And about the looks: Many people say it’s ugly, and depending on the angle and light it does sometimes look weird - most of the times though, at least in my opinion, it looks just fine or actually rather great. Sad to see it go, I think it would have looked really nice with the new 3 Series design, and it was one hell of a practical car.

Not as sexy as a 4GC, not as rugged as an X3
