In preparation for Pebble Beach this weekend, BMW has decided to give its 2002 Hommage - which was released in May this year - a new lease of life. They’ve gone for a striking orange and black livery as a stark comparison to the light blue of the original concept, along with ‘Turbomeister’ branding on the doors, bonnet and rear spoiler.

This livery has been applied to celebrate the fact that the original 1973 2002 Turbo was ‘the first series-produced vehicle in Europe to feature turbo technology’. The ‘02 Turbo may have only produced 173lb ft of torque back in the day but it remains a revered classic that has shot up in value in recent years.

The concept car is based upon the M2 chassis but with much shorter overhangs to emulate the legendary classic. The 2002 Turbo is essentially the M2’s Great Grandfather, so there’s a natural lineage with the Hommage’s awesome turbocharged straight-six despite it packing an extra 1000cc over the original car’s 2-litre motor.

We love a novelty concept at CT and especially when it is based upon as quintessential a classic as the BMW 2002. To check out Alex’s test of its Grandson - the M2 - click here.

While I quite like the new one, I’d take the older one over the Hommage
