The Bonkers Apollo IE Hypercar Would Make The Dark Knight Jealous
Remember Gumpert? The German producer of mad, conspicuously styled supercars has been reborn as Apollo Automobil, and its very first production car is here. It’s called the Intensa Emozione, and it’s one hell of an opening salvo.
We’re talking about a 6.3-litre, naturally aspirated V12. 769bhp propelling just 1250kg of car. Oh, and a ludicrously extreme aero package that generates 1350kg of downforce at 186mph. For context, a Renault RS.01 racing car produces 1250kg at the same speed.
It’s essentially a track-only version of the Arrow concept revealed last year, and it’s staggeringly fast. 0-62mph is done and dusted in 2.7 seconds, the top speed is 208mph, and it’ll pummel your face with lateral forces of up to 2.0g in the corners. Just 10 will be made, at a cost of €2.3 million (£2.05m) each. Ouch.
The IE is quite an exquisite thing, though. The chassis and body panels are all made from carbonfibre, with the monocoque plus front and rear subframes tipping the scales at just 105kg. The double wishbone suspension is inboard mounted, and features posh Bilstein shock absorbers. And of course we have the aforementioned nat-asp V12, which is hooked up to a Hewland six-speed sequential, pneumatic-shift gearbox.
There’s plenty of tech here, too. The ABS for instance has 10 settings, while the traction control has 12 - so you can slowly wean yourself off electronic assistance gently, in a way that should lessen the chance of your £2 million track toy ending up in a barrier.
As well as an unhinged supercar with styling that makes the Batmobile look understated, buyers will be given access to Apollo’s ‘Time Attack’ programme, taking place at “the most relevant European racing circuits,” the company says. IE owners can even go along to the firm’s private testing sessions, should they wish.
All sounds very lovely, but what if you’re a mega rich supercar buyer and want to drive away from the track too? Don’t worry: Apollo is promising that the road-legal Arrow will “see the light” in 2019. For now, we’re just looking forward to seeing and hearing the IE in action.
