Bow Down To The New McLaren F1
This is the first time that we've seen the all-new McLaren P1 (yes, P1) in the flesh at the Paris motor show. It's a supercar which Macca is crowning the “most exciting, most capable, most technologically advanced and most dynamically accomplished supercar ever made.”
If a sentence like that isn’t enough of a mouthful, try cramming the mid-engined, P1’s power figures in your gob, too; rumour has it (we’ll find out next year) that the P1’s modified MP4-12C V8 engine will produce around 1000bhp thanks to F1 KERS tech.
“Not bad”, we hear you say…Well, consider one more small detail. The carbonfibre-bodied McLaren P1 is said to weigh just 1300kg (the same as Ford Focus, give or take a fat person), which translates to a top speed of 240mph, with 60mph taken care of in under 3.0sec.
Sound familiar? Yup, those are the same figures as the McLaren F1, this new boy’s spiritual father. But that’s not where the similarities between the two models end; the roof scoop and heavily sculpted doors are direct ‘copy and pastes’.
While we're taking numbers, you should be impressed to know that that the P1's massive 'active' rear wing and aero tech produces a colossal 600kg of downforce 'below maximum speed' according to the boffs. Put into context, that's five times more than the MP4-12C and the equivalent of five chunkers on the roof.
Until McLaren gives us the official details, the rest is guess work. What we do know, however, is that the P1 will cost substantially less than a Bugatti Veyron. Speaking of which…
