Cue the 'STD' jokes: the new Focus ST will feature a diesel variant for the first time in the model's history.

Talking to Auto Express at the Geneva Motor Show, a Ford boss confirmed that the car will use a 2.0-litre TDCi engine making 182bhp. The 0-62mph sprint will take eight seconds, and it'll get the same suspension and steering tune as the petrol-powered ST.

Although the power is vastly down on the current 247bhp petrol ST, the big torque figures from the diesel engine could prove problematic, considering the current-generation ST's tendency to torque steer. Here's hoping the new Focus gets a clever diff to sort this issue out.
