Britain's Legendary Brighton Speed Trials Faces The Axe: Here's How We Can Save It

This fantastic event has been running since 1905, but the local council wants to kill it off

The Brighton Speed Trials, thought to be the oldest running motor race, is under threat. The yearly event has used part of Madeira Drive by the Brighton seafront to hold drag races for car and motorbikes since 1905, but all that could soon be coming to an end. The Green Party-led Brighton and Hove City Council - which claims the event doesn't fit with a modern Brighton - is yet to approve the trials for 2014.

The event wasn't held in 2013 after the 2012 trials resulted in the tragic death of motorcycle sidecar co-rider Charlotte Tagg. Over 10,000 people have signed an e-petition calling on the council to approve the trials for 2014 and we're among them.
