Next year’s C8 Chevrolet Corvette will be able to nail the imperial 0-60mph sprint in just 3.0 seconds, or 2.9 with the optional Z51 pack added.

These are hypercar numbers from the first Corvette to put the engine in the middle. Both versions of the car complete a standing quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds, with the standard car – that fraction slower off the line – actually finishing the pass 2mph faster than the Z51-spec alternative, at 123mph.

Chevy gives credit for the incredible acceleration to the new rearward weight bias which gives more traction, improved chassis and tyre tuning and, of course, the latest small-block V8 to feature in the brand’s sports cars. The normally-aspirated 6.2-litre LT2 puts 495bhp down through acceleration-biased gear ratios and ‘lightning-fast’ shifts.

The clever gearbox arrangement houses not just the twin-clutch transmission itself, but also the differential, final drive, controls system and its own lubrication and cooling provision. It’s mounted low for the best effect on handling.

A mechanical limited-slip differential is standard while Z51-equipped cars ‘are offered’ with an electronic alternative that Chevy says is much more effective than previous designs and offers ‘ultimate control’ on track.

In some videos it sounds like a AMG-V8 :/ (not a good point in my book, this low-muffled rumble, unless you fullexhaustraightpipe it..), would have been much better if it sounded like the C7 or like a Flatcrank V8 (Mustang GT and M3 V8 comes to mind…).

As others are suggesting, Dodge should bring back a new Viper, but in a newer form, with that almighty V10! No Hellcat V8 for me, please, as I love that V10’s deep roar a hundred times more than that V8’s rumble, which sounds a little restrained to me (it should have had a higher redline and shift point to make it slightly better).

Seeing how Vipers are the topic today, i can see a new Viper working if Dodge did these (but its Dodge so they probably won’t)

  1. Joint develop it with Ferrari, develop a new V10 with them, maybe 5.0 to 6.0 Litres and Turbocharged if needed.
  2. Offer it in Dual Clutch (and Manual if Dodge still wants to, but remember the Viper failed because very few bought them because an auto wasnt offered)
  3. This may be controversial, but dont sell them at Dodge Dealers, people for some reason dont like to buy $80-100k cars at a dealership which sells $20k cars. Best sell em at Ferrari or Maserati Dealers (have a special “Viper Section” at those dealers)
