A C8 Chevrolet Corvette Falling Off A Lift Is A Surprisingly Common Occurrence
Prepare to wince. A lot. The video below is surveillance footage from an as-yet unidentified Chevrolet dealership depicting a Torch Red C8 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 falling backwards off a four-post lift, causing what looks to be significant damage.
Since there’s still a window sticker present, it looks like this was a pre-delivery inspection. Imagine waiting weeks or months for your fresh Z06 to be delivered, only to get a phone call telling you it’s been wrecked before even hitting the road, or worse yet, having to make that phone call.
The thing is, this has happened before. It’s the third instance of a C8 falling off a lift that we know of - it’s reasonable to assume that it’s happened other times without the general public finding out about it.
Now the Corvette is mid-engined, it has a different weight distribution, thus relocated lifting points relative to the old C7. The problem seems to stem from some mechanics not using these points, causing the C8s to be unstable on the lifts. It certainly doesn’t fill us with confidence knowing that one Corvette Forum member claims to have installed bright red anodised jacking pucks to prevent such a thing from occurring.
The two previous known C8 lift topplings occurred in 2020 and 2021. Funnily enough, footage emerged in 2021 of a C7 Corvette falling backwards off a two-post lift, again due to weight distribution, as its front-mounted engine had been removed.
The latest Corvette victim really isn’t something you’d want to smash on a workshop floor. It’s powered by a 5.5-litre, flat-plane crank V8 capable of revving to 8,600rpm and producing 670bhp. The Z06 also gets significantly upgraded suspension and aero relative to the standard Corvette Stingray.
It will eventually be making its way to the UK in right-hand drive. Here’s hoping garages up and down the country are prepared to lift them from the correct points.
