Clarkson's BBC Contract Clause Could Delay 'New Top Gear' Until 2017

One of the worst kept secrets in the entertainment business right now is that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May will go on to host a new car show. It’s just a question of when rather than if, but it’s looking like the ‘when’ could end up being later than expected.

The Mirror is citing a “TV source’” who confirmed that the trio received an offer from ITV, but a clause in Clarkson’s contract would stop the UK channel from airing a rival show fronted by the 55-year-old until 2017.

But, it’s not all bad news. A deal with an online distributor like Netflix or Amazon - both thought to be front-runners in the quest to sign the ex-TG presenters - would get around this issue. The source told the Mirror:

“It means Netflix or Amazon are favourites to sign up the team. There is a feeling that if they wait two years it gives Chris Evans a chance to get his new Top Gear show off and running.”

With the last episode of Top Gear featuring the trio ending on an underwhelming note - and with dissapointing ratings - we can’t wait to see them back in action doing what they do best. Watch this space…
