Classifieds' Car Of The Day: Classic Ford Mustang Fastback

We're eyeing up some incredibly cool classic American muscle

We love the Equus Bass muscle car, but at $250,000, it's a little out of our reach. Instead, we've been looking at the car which inspires its shape, the original Ford Mustang Fastback.

The first-generation 'Stang arguably never looked better than in fastback form, and the image of Steve McQueen thrashing one on the streets of San Francisco in Bullitt cemented its status as a motoring icon.

The 4.7-litre 'Windsor' 289ci V8 version is good for 200bhp. That's not exactly a huge amount, but it'll sound great, and at around 1300kg, early Mustangs don't weigh as much as you might think.

This 289 example we've found for sale is in a superb condition. It's just arrived from Texas, so it's not had to endure the rust-inducing British weather. Sure, at £35,000 it's not cheap, but for Steve McQueen-levels of coolness, that's not at all bad.
