Classifieds' Car Of The Day: Gentlemanly Jaguar XJR

We spot a lovely supercharged V8 Jag, and we want it bad...

Jaguar XJR

We've come over all sophisticated for our latest Car Of The Day and are looking at an early 'X308' Jaguar XJR. With a 370bhp supercharged 4.0-litre V8, and an interior with lashings of wood and leather, there's isn't a more comfortable way to go fast for this kind of money.

Despite the near two ton weight of the Jag, it'll make the 0-60mph dash in just 5.3 seconds, and go on to an electronically limited 155mph top speed. It won't quite match the current XJR in terms of drivability, but the X308 version is still a damn fine steer.

Jaguar XJR 3

Early X308 XJRs had issues with the Nikasil cylinder liners failing, but this was mostly due to high sulphur content in petrol for a period of time. As the levels of sulphur aren't quite so high anymore, it's generally not an issue these days.

This 1999 model we've found could well be worth a look. The mileage is reasonable for the year, and it's had the often troublesome water pump sorted. If you go for any X308 XJR, make sure you also check the chain tensioners have been done, as that's another problem area for these cars.

So go on, pick up the phone. This is a helluva load of car for only £3100.
