Classifieds' Car Of The Day: Tech-Heavy Mitsubishi 3000GT

Owning Mitsubishi's 280bhp 90s coupe is a risky proposition - but we think it's worth it

When Mitsubishi launched its GTO - badged as the 3000GT outside of Japan - in the early 1990s, it really went nuts with the technology side of things. The brand threw all sorts at it: automatically deploying aerodynamic devices at both ends, four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, and electronically adjustable suspension - to name but a few.

It's quick, too. In twin-turbo flavour the 3000GT's 3.0-litre V6 develops a meaty 280bhp. 0-60mph is dispatched in 5.7 seconds, and it'll top out at 155mph. It'd be even quicker if it were a little less lardy; the 3000GT tips the scales at a heavyweight 1700kg.

3000GTs and imported GTOs are now pretty cheap - there are plenty for under £5k - despite the official UK cars initially costing the equivalent of £60,000 once inflation is taken into account. The catch? All that tech has a habit of going wrong, and when it does go, it's painfully expensive.

For instance, if the engine ECU dies, that's £1000. The gearbox ECU? If it goes and there's transmission damage in the process, you're looking at around £2500. And those clever active aero bits might be cool gadgets, but they have a tendency to fail too. No wonder Mitsubishi toned down the technology as the car got older.

With that it mind, it's a good idea to spend a little more rather than bag a tatty, cheap one. This 1994 model could be worth a look. It's done 87,000 miles - which is low considering the age - and is up for £3695. Of course, owning any 3000GT/GTO will be a risky proposition, but is it worth a gamble? We think so.
