Classifieds' Car Of The Day: Toyota Altezza RS200 Import

This Japanese import is a great sports saloon you may not have considered...

On the face of it, the first-gen Lexus IS is a tempting proposition. Decent looks, rear-wheel drive and good build quality. Only trouble is, you're given the choice between a 2.0-litre straight-six with a relatively weedy 153bhp, or a 211bhp 3.0-litre which only ever came with an auto 'box. Instead, why not go for option number three? Bag an imported Toyota Altezza RS200.

Don't let the name confuse you, it's still the same car as the IS; Altezza was the name used when the car was sold in Japan under the Toyota brand. Instead of a straight six, the Altezza RS200 packs a high-revving 2.0-litre four-pot putting out a tasty 210bhp. Unlike the 3.0-litre IS300 this is available with a manual 'box, and it's even a good deal lighter than its Lexus cousin.

This gives the 'Tezza some respectable stats. 0-60mph takes 7.2 seconds, and it'll hit 140mph. The whole package makes a strong case for itself as a unconventional sports saloon.

If you're tempted, service history is a good thing to have. It's not mentioned on the advert of this 2005 model we've found, so if you call, make sure the seller has it. These Altezzas are rare so many sellers charge over the odds, but this one's up at a reasonable £2395.

Go on, you know you want to...
