Every time I walk up to ‘our’ Honda Civic Type R longtermer, I now find myself struck by just how tall and - to an extent - awkward it looks. Why? Because of the new Civic Type R prototype.

Revealed at the Paris Motor Show last week, it’s based on the new 10th-generation Civic hatchback, a car which is lower and wider than the standard ninth-gen hatch. Throw in an bodykit which is arguably even more aggressive than the current car’s, and you have something which looks meaner and more purposeful. The proportions look a little better, too - just check out these comparison images and you’ll see what we mean.

It is worth bearing in mind that the production model will be diluted ever-so-slightly, but given Honda’s track record of bringing out concepts and ‘prototypes’ that are near identical to the eventual showroom cars, don’t expect much to change.

The production version is expected to make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March, and Honda has confirmed it’ll go on sale in the second half of 2017.

I’m probably one of the few people who thinks that current Type R is ugly and ricey whereas the new one is still ricey but looks much better (especially in that colour)

The proportions of the new Civic are totally screwed up, not just on the Type-R. The wheelbase is too long, the bonnet is too long and the windscreen is way too steep. As if they coudn’t decide whether they want a saloon or a liftback. Of course, the designers can’t do everything they want on a compact car, but cars like the Renault Megane, Ford Focus or even a Kia Cee’d prove that you can indeed make a compact car look pleasant.
I won’t question the performance. The Type-R is beyond any doubt on that matter, but I just can’t look at it and say “yes, it looks good”.

It looks very clean, but it has too many curves and angles at the back imo but a great car nonetheless

All the ‘rice’ comments are getting old. This isn’t a single cam some kid is driving after getting an emotional high off of NFS/F&F, this is a car designed to lap a track quickly and stilly be marginally affordable.

The only reason one fould call ot ‘rice’ is in its actually definition of race inspired. But really how is this any worse than say any WRX between 2001-2008 or anything else to thar effect?
