Could The Ford GT’s 3.5 V6 Be Sold As A Crate Engine?

Judging by recent comments from Dave Pericak of Ford Performance, the 3.5-litre Ecoboost V6 from the GT could well end up in other supercars
Could The Ford GT’s 3.5 V6 Be Sold As A Crate Engine?

It’s pretty much science fact that if you own a small, start-up supercar company you will stuff a General Motors V8 of some description into your unobtainium-constructed product. But, the legendary GM LS crate engines could well have some stiff competition on the way, in the form of the Ford GT’s 600bhp+ 3.5-litre Ecoboost V6.

Recalling a conversation with Dave Pericak of Ford Performance at the first round of the World Endurance Championship earlier this year, Autocar reports that the possibility of the engine being sold to other race teams was hinted at. Further than that, Pericak said that there is “no reason” why the twin-turbo couldn’t be used for low-volume sports and supercars.

Could The Ford GT’s 3.5 V6 Be Sold As A Crate Engine?

So far, so vague, but Ford does have previous in this area. After all, less special versions of the 3.5-litre Ecoboost V6 are already sold to other companies, and the Blue Oval currently offers plenty of other powerplants as crate engines. Just look at the Zenos E10 S we were enjoying a few weeks ago with its Ford Focus ST-shared 2.0-litre turbo lump mounted midship.

So, if you were running a start-up supercar company or were about to build some bonkers drag-strip special, would you consider this V6 over a similarly powerful GM LS V8?

Could this replace the LS conversion on the modded car scene…….

No, the Ls is ubiquitous for reasons the ecoboost can’t match

Very improbable. The LS is popular in the scene because it’s dirt cheap and can easily be tuned, two attributes the EcoBoost V6 won’t have. An LS can be worked at with the most primitive tools, the highly complicated EcoBoost V6 will require a PC and specific software.

Remember that the GTR has a V6 too and they’re already reaching 2500 hp. Nothing bad about it, just the lack of V8 noise, in my opinion.

Well, those 2500 HP engines share almost nothing with the factory ones.
