CT Asks: Black Box Insurance; Yes Or No?
How do you feel about having every corner, every overtake and every braking manoeuvre tracked by a telematics box 24 hours a day? And what do you make of the fact that said box will violently spank your bank account if you choose to drive between 11pm and 6am? Sounds like a massive pain in the arse, so why bother?
Let’s face facts; most of us young blokes drive like cocks. This means that we’re statistically more likely to be involved in a crash (I’m on two write-off accidents already). What this also means is that our insurance premiums are sky high; £3500 for a Ford Fiesta, anyone?
That's why some of us are opting for the ‘box. Drive sensibly and the ‘happy’ data collected will mean that your insurance company will love you and reduce the amount you pay; by up to 50 per cent, apparently.
So exactly what data is collected? This list is pretty hardcore, so prepare yourselves:
1) The distance it travels at those times 2) Where the car is located 3) On what type of roads the car travels 4) Speed of travel 5) Braking behaviour of the driver 6) Direction and speed of travel before and after a collision 7) Force of impact in a collision 8) At what times the car is used
In light of the obvious monetary benefits then, would you consider a tracker? Have you got one installed? Or would you rather pay through the roof for your driving freedom? I know which side I’m on.
