Performance car brand Cupra will introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the next all-new Leon, the CEO of Seat has confirmed.

Luca de Meo told reporters that while the 2020 Seat Leon will be the first to introduce electrification to the model, Cupra’s version will also benefit from plug-in hybrid internals – and more power.

Speaking about both the Seat and Cupra variants, he is quoted by Auto Express as saying:

“In 2020, the new generation of Leon will come to market in five-door and ST versions. It will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain that will produce up to 245bhp and less than 50g/km of CO2 emissions. Just before the end of 2020 the Cupra Leon and Cupra Leon ST, both with plug-in hybrid versions, will arrive.”

The suggested power output matches that of the Cupra Formentor compact SUV that was unveiled just a few weeks ago. With at least 50bhp less than the internal combustion-powered hot Leon it would be positioned as a fast but frugal alternative to the excellent full-fat car.

Its additional weight would make it a little less dynamically impressive than the petrol car, too, but the potential to commute to work and back without using any fuel is likely to be a huge temptation to buyers. It remains to be seen whether the vast cost of batteries and motors makes the hybrid more expensive than the more powerful petrol version – or whether the latter is simply axed.
