This Detachable AI Device Is The Steering Wheel Of The Future, According To Jaguar

It may look like something out of an F1 car of the future, but Jaguar’s ‘Sayer’ steering wheel concept is all about exploring what mobility might be like “in 2040 and beyond.”

You’ll find it in the firm’s incoming ‘Future-Type’ concept, but arguably, the device itself is more important than the car it’ll be installed in. Why? Because it won’t be tied to that one car alone.

It’s not only looking at the dawn of autonomous motoring, but also the concept of car ownership itself. Given the expected rise of car sharing, Jaguar reckons that Sayer (which is named after E-Type designer Malcolm Sayer) could end up being the only bit of the car you’ll own in the future.

Jaguar calls the device “the first voice-activated artificial intelligence steering wheel,” capable of carrying out “hundreds of tasks.” The idea is you tell it where you need to be and by what time, and it’ll work out exactly when you need to leave, making sure a car autonomously arrives at your doorstep for the departure time.

Crucially for us petrolheads who are uneasy about the prospect of autonomy, Jaguar’s vision is one that still factors in the squishy human behind the wheel. Sayer will apparently “advise which parts of the journey you might enjoy driving yourself,” so yes - it is an actual steering wheel, and not just a very fancy version of Siri.

Sayer will be showcased at ‘Jaguar Land Rover Tech Fest’ in London later this week.

They are trying to reinvent the wheel (literally), nothing else. It looks very much like it’s modern for the sake of being modern without bringing any kind of advantage. No, thanks, I want a steering wheel that looks like, you know, a steering wheel. With a circular ring, a button for the horn and everything.

According to the very professional review of the top gear trio, voice activated commands never work :s
Not sure we’ll want to tell our direction to the wheel
