This Evil Dakar Race Car Is The Coolest Peugeot We've Ever Seen
Peugeot has announced that it is returning to Dakar next year in this beefy 2008 buggy. The 2008 DKR might share a name and mild styling inspiration with the little crossover, but that's about it.
Perhaps surprisingly, given its need to traverse South America's toughest terrains, it's rear-wheel drive. "The philosophy behind the 2008 DKR marks a radical break and packs a high number of new ideas,” says Carlos Sainz, who will be behind the wheel of this beast. “The end result is like no other two-wheel drive car. Having done the last two Dakars in a two-wheel drive car, I am convinced it is a solution that can win the event."
Despite the potential traction disadvantages, Peugeot claims that two-wheel drive allowed them to implement advantages elsewhere, as the team could fit massive 37-inch tyres with more suspension travel. Its buggy-like appearance is accentuated by the need to implement a steep approach angle to the front of the car, resulting in minimal overhang and a stub-nosed look.
Unfortunately the Peugeot/Red Bull/Total partnership is keeping schtum about the powertrain, but we know that partnering Sainz is Cyril Despres, a five-time Dakar champion on bikes.
If Peugeot dominates Dakar the way Sebastien Loeb's 208 T16 dominated Pikes Peak last year, then the competition better be worried.
